This article got me thinking about how it is that we so rarely hear good news on TV. Not that the WHY is any great mystery. "If it bleeds it leads," is an old saying and satire or not, Network is still an unsettling commentary on the media. And not just the American media. A quick look at recent events in the UK show the the problem of poor media ethics is everywhere.

So what do we do about this? What CAN we do is really the better question. The media is run by a handful or large corporations with ungodly amounts of money and influence. So the only thing that any of us can really do is remember that what we see in the media is NEVER the full story but only one point of view. And that at the end of that broadcast, article, video or whatever is another person who may or may not have an agenda which may or may not be in our best interests.

In other words, our only real hope is ourselves and our own ability to reason and take things with a grain of salt. It may not seem like much but someone who can think for themselves has always been what those in power fear most.

The answer as to why the news is bad is first there are a lot of bad things going on, and second: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MoneyDearBoy.

I think part of the reason we as a society want to hear bad news is it makes us feel more assured about our own lives. If all we hear are good stories about people's successes we're going to feel like our lives are lacking in comparison.

As for you last sentence we absolutely should keep in mind that everything we hear from the media is going to be presented with a bias, with a spin. It is up to each individual to try and sift out the truth from what is presented, but we rarely do as most of us watch or read media that already confirms our own opinions.
