A recent article from the Times indicates that almost all DVR/cable box combos create by the Average Joe™  have a bigger carbon footprint than the Jolly Green Giant. (sarcasm intended)

The New York Times reported those little boxes of stupid (that spew consumer propaganda) are now the single largest electricity drain in a household in the US. Congratulations, lemmings. Edited because it seemedt too damn distracting for some

One high-definition DVR and one high-definition cable box use an average of 446 kilowatt hours a year — about 10 percent more than a 21-cubic-foot energy-efficient refrigerator, a recent study found.

These set-top boxes are energy hogs mostly because their drives, tuners and other components are generally running full tilt, or nearly so, 24 hours a day, even when not in active use, the Times writes.

A study by the Natural Resources Defense Council said the boxes consumed $3 billion in electricity per year in the United States — and that 66 percent of that power is wasted when no one is watching and shows are not being recorded
, the Times writes.

Observation and question: When my wife and I decided to stop using the drug known on the streets as "cable", and found other ways of leisure entertainment, we found we had enough time to start a business, grow it to TWO businesses with a payroll of over 50 people, and now run one of the hottest restaurant/clubs in Atlanta, GA. My observation and opinion is that decision and the result enjoy causational relationship. We found we simply had more time to be productive.

My questions (pick one or more, as you can handle): Is this new information enough to make you finally quit? Do you think you can quit "cable"? After reading this can you tell the cable/dish conglomerate to fuck off? If you find you can't, or even find yourself defending the relationship do you think you are taking the 'high road'?  Are you sitting there, reading this, while mindlessly consuming something that was advertised and purchased? What would you do with the time you save if you could quit?

BONUS: Do you think if you ever wake up and realize how much bullshit you are sold in any given day, you may re-examine your opinion of who really 'represents' your values in government?

ETA for clarification: No, I'm not 'better than you' because I don't watch drivel. But I have bettered myself as a member of society, and if you can't handle that, that is on you, not me. I have no problem with leisure time as a concept. I don't care how you spend your leisure time. It would be nice if your leisurely activities would reduce your energy consumption. Everyone benefits when there is more productivity and less consumption. But feel free to consume more than you fair share or not.

My family quit cable ages ago. It saved us about $60/month or whatever it was we were paying by then, and quitting probably gave us an hour or two of kill time back to play with.

But we didn't really watch much TV to begin with, so time-wise it didn't do much for us. :P

What do you mean by "conglomerate?"

I run two organizations and still manage to have time for Louis CK and Charlie Rose.

But that's a good tip about actually hitting the "off" button on the box -- instead of just flicking off the TV.

::nod:: I always make sure the box is off when I leave the room. I dunno if ours is out of the ordinary but it does go into sleep mode if you leave it sit a while.

but then who's going to spend all that free time with the kids?

electricity that's not consumed cannot be saved. either you use it or the generators have surplus capacity. turning off stuff is a good idea to keep usage within predictable levels.

Is this new information enough to make you finally quit?

No. Even with my cable box going, my electricity bill rarely passes $50/month. Well within my budget.

Do you think you can quit "cable"?

Only when mlb.tv stops blacking out local games.

After reading this can you tell the cable/dish conglomerate to fuck off? If you find you can't, or even find yourself defending the relationship do you think you are taking the 'high road'?

If I'm supposed to quit cable because of the environment, I can honestly say I do not give a shit.

If I'm supposed to quit cable because it's expensive, well, yes. But until I can get everything I want to watch on demand through either Amazon or Netflix or Hulu or some sort of streaming service, it won't happen, sorry.

Are you sitting there, reading this, while mindlessly consuming something that was advertised and purchased?

Oh, how cute, says the guy on a PC on an internet connection that was almost certainly advertised for on TV.

What would you do with the time you save if you could quit?

I'd be much better at Team Fortress 2.

Do you think if you ever wake up and realize how much bullshit you are sold in any given day, you may re-examine your opinion of who really 'represents' your values in government?

Well, the answer is no one. But the left's stranglehold is strong.

My cable box does not "spew consumer propaganda" because I use it to skip commercials. I haven't seen a television advertisement and more importantly, I haven't seen a teaser for local or network newscasts, in almost ten years, and it is glorious.

Yeah that's not gonna fucking happen. I punch a clock, I pay my bills, I have enough left for a few things to keep myself entertained, I go hang out with my family in Orlando twice a year, I'm not going to open a successful nightclub just because I quit watching The Closer one night a week, that's BULLSHIT.

My roommate and I have basic cable (15US, was 25, but we got them to reduce it after we threatened to cut our cable) and internet. Depending on the time of the year, I might watch 6-7 hours of TV, and that is mainly football during the fall and fox animated tv Sunday night and the MLB game of the week on Saturday. I purchased MLB.tv last year, but the local blackouts killed it for me, so if I want to watch a Braves game, I go over to a relative's house and watch it there. For everything else, there is Netflix and my DVD collection.

You can drop the snobbery and the falsely placed high-horse you rode in with.

Oooh aren't you the special little enlightened snowflake.

That said, damn you must have watched a lot of TV, I mean seriously the 6 - 8 hours a week I would save by not watching it ain't gonna give me the free time to start a lemonade stand forget something critically important like a nightclub, especially once you factor in the extra time I would have to spend cleaning my house and repairing the damage that my 4 now extremely bored 24 hours a day rather than 20 - 22 hours a day kids would cause.

As far as what I would have time to do if I didn't watch those 6 - 8 hours a day, well not too much really since it only ever happens after 10 PM on weeknights, I suppose I would get a touch more sleep, maybe play a bit more EQII, and make a few more REALLY LONG posts on here.

Ultimately it comes down to this, I am already about as productive as I want to be and I guard my leisure time quite closely, since there are TV shows which it gives me pleasure to watch I see absolutely nothing wrong with using some of that free time to watch them, any argument against this is nothing but sour grapes on your part trying to claim that your hobbies are somehow objectively superior to mine

Since I'm an actual liberal, I know that my interests aren't represented, given that democrats are center-right and republicans are right-insane but I don't fret too much over it. I vote for people who seem more or less rational and don't resemble Stephen King characters.

Hell, I don't even have a TV in the apartment anymore; it's sitting in the storage shed. What shows I want to watch I can either get on Netflix/Hulu/network website streaming or (I freely admit it) via BitTorrent. The only cable TV I had back in Kansas was the 10 channels or so I got free with my cable Internet service (stuff like CSPAN, local access channels, and for some reason WGN). I don't miss having a TV, and I certainly don't miss cable. When I was on a business trip back in March, I tried to watch cable in my hotel room, and was surprised (though I shouldn't have been) by how much crap there was on 40+ channels that wasn't worth watching. Likewise, when we were visiting my fiancee's sister earlier that month, the only thing we watched on their 100+ channel cable package were reruns of CSI: NY.

That plus the facts that I don't drive and recycle whenever able make me an environmentally-responsible citizen, right?? :P
