Friends, we have a problem. Not enough people wait breathlessly for the newest xkcd comic. Some people don't even know about Neal Stephenson or worse, Patrick Rothfuss. Hell, these people probably haven't even seen the entire series of Buffy three times or more. Ask them about Stargate:SG-1 and what do you get? Nothing. Not a goddamn thing. Battlestar Galactica? They don't even know what you're talking about. Firefly? Yeah right. Don't even go there. Much worse than this, they don't even watch PBS. Assholes, amirite? Uncurious bastards, dragging us all down. Shit, they probably think that Penny Arcade is some kind of retro dance club downtown.
Why, just the other day, someone asked me how I voted. I said, "Brilliantly." It irritates me though, that my vote for Democrat X meant just as much as these uncurious a-holes voting for Democrat X. MY VOTE IS MORE INFORMED THAN THEIRS! I was trying to explain to this fellow something about the thing with the space-time continuum and isolated expansion in the first moments of the Big Bang. You know what he did? I'll tell you what he didn't do, and that was thank me. Thank me for enlightening his stupid ass. He didn't even care. He just looked at me like I was the asshole.
So what are we going to do about this? You can't make them watch the good TV shows. You can't make them care about half-assed, quasi-scientific, analogized theoretical physics fed through a 10th-grade understanding matrix. I have no less than eight popular physics books on my shelf. Eight. How many do they have? None, I bet. Can they tell a story about light speed and trains? Hell no. And they think they have the right to go anywhere near a voting booth?

Date: 19/6/11 13:44 (UTC)Oh I did the Klingon bit, but eventually, a lot of pointing and laughing can do wonders to discourage one not wasting time or funds on 'cosplay'.
Funny, the ones 'most' into these genres are, for the most part, struggling financially or emotionally.
I've never seen any of those series. But I know who Neil Gaiman is because I listened to an audio book called 'Anansi Boys'. I didn't even know the Watchman existed until I saw the teaser trailer for the movie.
And I feel fine....

You all missed the point
Date: 20/6/11 00:03 (UTC)Re: You all missed the point
Date: 20/6/11 01:36 (UTC)If no human knew how long the Earth took to orbit the sun, the Earth would continue to orbit away, once every 365.24 days. The universe would not be affected in any way, the Earth, Sun, and gravity would all continue to function.
If nobody watched Buffy, the world would be a less cultured place. This would have a real impact.
