Why are we listening to the Bush administration people anyway? They didn’t get bin Laden,” he said on The Daily Show. “They’re like the Winklevoss twins of getting bin Laden. If you were the guys who were going to kill bin Laden, you would have killed bin Laden!”

I know this aired over a week ago, but since the initial story first broke, several things have been cleared up: water boarding detainees did NOT lead to the success of the OBL raid. Even John McCain said this in a speech on the Senate floor recently. In fact, several of the detainees provided false information that hurt the process of finding OBL. And some right wingers are using this story as some sort of odd vindication that it was completely a Bush policy win. Given the developments after the raid (Pakistani objections, etc), we can rightly put that canard to rest, never mind that was ten years ago and completely overlooks any subsequent events.

Wasn't it in 2003 that W said he didn't know where OBL was and wasn't that concerned?

I believe it was 2001 or '02, actually. Don't have it just in front of me or I could say for sure.

Found it, White House Press Conference: March 13, 2002

"And, again, I don't know where he [Osama Bin Laden] is. I — I'll repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him."

Maybe he just got confused and thought 9/11 had a 6-month statute of limitations for a brief moment.

Ah the good old "I meant to do that" or "I meant not to do that" response.

I thought Santorum's quote about Torture was typical Tea Partier politics and John McCain's response was quite classy. It seems McCain's principles won't let him call X Y. Santorum, OTOH, is a typical Tea Party Republican.

If anything he turned a deficit of intelligence into a surplus.

Trying to kill bin Laden...

Gary Berntsen, in his book Jawbreaker (http://www.amazon.com/Jawbreaker-Al-Qaeda-Personal-Account-Commander/dp/0307351068/), describes how he admitted to the Afghanis that he was out to kill bin Laden. This may have led the Afghanis to drag their feet on the operation. It showed that the US was not interested in justice, but merely wanted revenge. Had Berntsen told the Afghanis that he wanted to arrest bin Laden, he may have had more support from the local militias.
