Damn hippies and their deviant behaviors.

So basically this independent study pointed to the deviant generation of the 60s as a primary influence on the abusive priest problem. This isn't a very funny subject, but blaming the hippies? That is funny. What else can we blame the hippies for? I'm usually down for a good game of hippie-blaming, but this, I think, is a little... uh... you know... stupid.

I suggest hippies and people from the 60s commission their own independent study to point out that they weren't pedophiles and abusers. I mean, it is only the next logical step.

So anyways, what do we blame the hippies for? I blame them for the financial crisis myself. You know how many ex-hippies staff the biggest corporations? Yeah, you know what I'm talking about. Sell outs.

LEt me tell you about the hippies

Not everyone was a hippie back then. They were initially like the Tea party in a way; a bizarre tiny group that looked kinda scary to the status quo on TV.

But hippys stayed hippys. Just because you walked around looking like Billy from Easy Rider didn't made you a 'hippy' anymore than being a wigger makes you a Thug™. You just dressed hippie like and you were cool, man.

And no, hippies did not drink the Reagan Kool Aide. It was the drop-outs, jocks and nerds and the Jooz kids who got beat up all the time because they were Jooz became the cogs of the Beast.

Now they just be old pieces/parts while the hippies are still Truckin'™.

Hippies are fresh and wrinkle free, living hippie lives in the hills of KY and CA *cue FreeBird*.

Not only that but the hippies were apolitical. The real radicals were the New Left Mao fanboys.

"If you remember the 60s you really weren't there"...Country Joe

Since I remember the 60s, all too well, I would have to say that more than blaming the hippies, I think it's safe to blame "boomers" in general for any thing you want. We are pretty much responsible for the good and bad of "the way things are". But fear not Xers it's your turn next :D

Ha! I came in to say that he doesn't need to blame the hippies, he can just blame the boomers and have most of the problems of the last 50 years explained :P

I don't think the x'ers will have such a problem, they were pushed down by the boomers and pushed out by gen y.

Actually the funniest piece was this sentence fragment:

"an independent report commissioned by Catholic bishops"

It all stops to a halt right there.

Funny, I don't recall the permissive culture of the sixties ever ever going so far as to embrace child rape. In fact, I recall it being exactly the opposite.

Sometimes I wonder whether the Catholic hierarchy really understands the gravity of what was going on in their midst.

In fact I recall that in the 1960s the USA still went into conniptions over publishing Victorian-era porno movies, while in the USSR and Eastern bloc porn was illegal (yes, that part of Nineteen Eighty-Four was based on real-life, too. You can say a lot about the 1960s, but the word permissive would be nowhere in it.

This would be the same 1960s of Richard Nixon, Bull Connor, Governor Reagan of California, Barry Goldwater, and all those sex-phobic Communists blowing up cities in 1968? Not surprised the Catholic Church doesn't want to take responsibility for its own coverups, though. Makes its leaders typical politicians but piss-poor clergymen.

While we're at it about the 1960s that really was as opposed to the one of myth, I daresay that the mythology of the 1960s as some pacific golden age of progressivism has confused me the more I've actually read about the 1960s. The era of the first celebrity Republican governor of California, of one rather fantastically stupid conservative Rally-Round-The-Flagger who nowadays looks warm and fuzzy, of "Not having Dick Nixon to kick around anymore", of scandal over Uhura kissing Spock on Star Trek, and of the massive race riots and firebombed churches and assassination as a basic tool of US political life......

Suffice to say that if that's the era of the liberal consensus, good riddance to bad rubbish.

I don't know who thought a study commissioned by the Bishops would blame the actual culprit, especially when the culprit is the freaking Bishops (and the guy they rely on for their jobs). The one silver lining is that they appear to have avoided blaming the gays, one of Ratzinger's favorite targets in this whole thing, in favor of the nebulous "hippies". Either way, blaming the hippies is absurd. For one thing, this was going on long before the Age of Aquarius. If the hippies did anything to contribute to the current situation it's that they took some of the stigma away from sex in general and perhaps made it a bit easier for people to come forward with these allegations. Rest assured, this shit has been going on for centuries, it's just that the Church managed to cover it up before so it didn't get to the public.

I also have a hard time understanding how consenting adults having sex outside marriage (which people were also doing for centuries but which was suddenly "ok") "forced" priests to molest unconsenting children. Then again, my brother (who might as well be a Vatican flack) assures me the report is totally true (then again if the Pope told him he was a Llama he'd be convinced he was a llama).

"For one thing, this was going on long before the Age of Aquarius."

Lol yeah, they should go back through their own records and look at the lives of the Borgia popes.

One of them, don't remember which one off the top of my head, when he was a Cardinal in Spain was reportedly fond of arraigning political marriages between noble families with young children (the younger the better) and part of his fee for negotiating and performing the marriage was that he got to sleep with the bride on her wedding night.

The report blamed the sexual revolution for a rise in sexual abuse by priests, saying that Catholic clerics were swept up by a tide of "deviant" behavior that became more socially acceptable in the 1960s and '70s.

What?

Poor priests... a bunch of good boys who were overwhelmed by per pressure.

At least now we know why no altar boys were fondled before 1967.

Peter Coyote was interviewed for The Summer of Love and hearing his insights was pretty cool. I mean, you're so used to hearing him narrate documentaries for PBS, the History and Discovery Channel, and then to hear him talk about his dropping acid and the trips he enjoyed, was pretty different. It's like finding out Mr. Whipple was smoking doobies in the grocery store stock room or something ;)

Well let us see ~ a spike occurred in the 1960's of reported cases which had taken place when? during the 50s? or during the 60s? If the 50s, then i'd be concerned that a certain Alfred Kinsey may have funded some research which he did not finish due to sudden heart complications :/
