So, since http://picayuneitem.com/opinion/x2069371885/Get-ready-World-ends-May-21-according-to-radio-preacher the world ends starting May 21st and wrapping up for good October 21st, what are your plans for the Apocalypse?

Mine are simple:

1) Live life
2) Enjoy all manner of wicked indulgence and hedonism, eat and drink and be merry for tomorrow we wake up with a stomachache and a hangover!

In my view, of course, there is nothing to take seriously in the string of charlatans, hucksters, and con artists who part fools from their money. This guy's been proven as wrong as John Hagee's prediction the world will end in 2007. Though I keep being puzzled at the number of people who keep jumping to think "the world will end X year" even though it well.....hasn't.

So.....anyone got plans for end of the world parties on Saturday? ;P

I recall us winning the bronze medals at FIFA World Cup '94 (in the US by the way), so in a sense that *was* the end of the world. I mean, rivers of alcohol, fire(works) in the sky, screams and chants, bombs everywhere, people and dogs going crazy... A self-fulfilling prophecy! (Poor, poor Germans, they didn't see that (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dchm60W6ciw) coming).

Damn. I'll be on a plane at that time. I'll miss it. I always miss all the fun. Somehow, all sci-fi books about Apocalypses (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chrysalids) of some sort always end up with most of the world being rendered a wasteland, save for some obscure place called... Oss-trell-lah. Where the HELL is that!?

Also, the national soccer championship in SA finishes on Saturday. Our local team Ajax Cape Town is leading the table but last week they suffered a total rout, and if they repeat that shameful exercise in the weekend we could snatch the loss of a title from the jaws of almost-guaranteed triumph. If that happens, when i return THERE SHALL BE CORPSES!!!

Several science cable channels have been featuring a lot of specials on "the end of the world" themes, and the History Channel has been doing a few shows on the book of Revelation too. In a sense, one of these guys will ultimately be right: here's an interesting chart from Discover magazine:



What's interesting is they leave out an option for super-volcanoes (one in Siberia essentially destroyed the planet for tens of thousands of years. The eruption of the Toba caladra nearly wiped out humanity 75,000 years ago. The resulting climate change knocked human population down to about 1000 people, and they survived in caves along the coast of South Africa.

The Yellowstone super volcano is overdue for its explosion apparently by 40,000 years according to physicist Michio Kaku:

That supervolcano is why I'm less worried about nuclear war than some. That volcano will one day blow up and in all likelihood I'll be in the "Oh, hey, bright fla-" zone of North America if it happens when I'm alive, so....yeah. OTOH, volcanic soil is incredibly fertile....

We have a Bat Mitzvah to go to, so that's fairly apt for the occasion.

He's been trying to find out the exact time of the rapture; they've specified a time, but not a time zone, so we're wondering if it'll happen here first or whether we'll be OK through to the 22nd. Family Radio have yet to get back to him about that.
