The Democratic Senators left knowing they would have to return. The only reason they left was to garner public support in opposition to the union-busting bill which the Republicans were going to ram through. Conservatives and liberals both have reason to whine about getting laws "rammed down our throats". It take a statesman to accept compromise as something other than a dirty word; we have very few who qualify for that appellation.
