Western democracies first arose in Western societies which were fairly oppressive to women. At first the democracy was sexist itself, and then it wasn't, and women subsequently became more politically enfranchised thanks to the ideals and values which we usually imagine as flourishing best in a democratic environment.
What is the reason why the trajectory of women's rights in Egypt will not be positive from here, if the revolution succeeds in establishing a democracy? What's the defining difference between egypt's pre-democracy sexism and ours?
