The war was bigger and longer, I think if you compare the magnitude of it all, there is a relativity in both cases.
This is not a glorification of the fear-unity communal emotion during war, it is simply a statement that this is a different feeling from idolization.
Complete free will is obtained in a state where no forcing emotions, such as fear for instance, are involved.
