And it was also revolutionary regardless of where the rest of things ended up. By 1857 the Supreme Court had ruled that slavery was legal everywhere in the USA and blacks had never been US citizens (one of the major reasons the 14th Amendment mattered as it did). To go from *that* in 1857 to the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and the 13th Amendment in 1865 was very much impressive and a shift that was very well-handled.
