You know, the Catholic Church really needs to be more sensitive. What were they thinking building that 13-story mega-church next to a playground? Don't they see how insensitive that is to the all the little boys that Catholic priests molested? Don't they see that if they only moved the Church a few blocks (or a few miles) away, it would all be fine. I'm not hating on the Catholic Church, I just wish they would be more sensitive.

Is sacredness like an area effect or something? I will grant for the sake of the argument that "ground zero" is "sacred" or some thing akin to sacred. But, this doesn't help me, since I think the sacred ends exactly at the easement of the sidewalk. But is there like a radius of sacred waves that emanate forth from ground zero? Can the Muslims roll to save vs. sacred?

Not to downplay child molestation (as a survivor of that problem myself), but the difference between your analogy (or whoever thought of it) and the situation with the mosque is that with 9/11, 3,000+ people DIED because 20 or so Muslim extremists thought it was their religious duty to murder non-believers and they were going to each get 72 versions for doing so. With Catholic priests, they take an oath to NOT engage in sexual practices and yet selfishly molest children.

In other words, the Muslims did it because they felt their religion was telling them to do it. The Catholic priests molested children for their own selfish gains even though they knew their religion frowned upon it.

If a Catholic perish lead by someone who was a known child molester wanted to being construction on a new church next to a school or park, I would be just as upset as I am about the mosque being built near the site where thousands of innocent people lost their lives because of religious stupidity!

I think what's being ignored in some of the above conversation is that Stewart had a point-we generalize a tiny radical fringe of Islam to represent all Muslims, but we do not generalize a tiny radical fringe of Christianity to represent all Christians. Yes, some Muslims danced in the streets on 9/11, but many more were as outraged. And mainstream Christians, like Rev Jerry Falwell, agreed with the radical Muslim fringe that 9/11 was God's punishment upon America.

My point is that bin Laden no more represents Islam than Rev Falwell represents Christianity. The proposed community center should be a place of spiritual healing, and it is simple bigotry to call it a victory shrine to 9/11.

I think that building a mosque near Ground Zero would be a sign that the terrorists LOST. The terrorists try to advance their agenda and tactics as being in the name of Islam. By fighting the building of a mosque because of what the terrorists did on 9/11 helps reenforce that their act was in the name of Islam.

To me, building a mosque near ground zero says that this is a Muslim-friendly country, and the terrorists are batshit insane for calling 9/11 a strike against the enemies of Islam.
