HARTFORD, Conn. — A black man who went on a shooting rampage at a beer distributor calmly told an emergency operator that it was "a racist place" and that he "handled the problem" but wished he had shot more people.

[chessdev]  Fuck this guy.  We dont need this kind of "handling the problem"

Omar Thornton called emergency services after shooting 10 co-workers — eight fatally — on Tuesday morning at Hartford Distributors Inc. He introduced himself as "the shooter over in Manchester" and said he was hiding in the building, but he would not say where.

"You probably want to know the reason why I shot this place up," he said, his voice steady. "This place is a racist place. They're treating me bad over here. And treat all other black employees bad over here, too. So I took it to my own hands and handled the problem. I wish I could have got more of the people."

...

Thornton, 34, went on his rampage moments after he was forced to resign when confronted with video evidence that he had been stealing and reselling beer.

[chessdev]  *BLINK*  They catch him ON TAPE stealing and reselling beer.... but "THEY" are the problem??
I'm sick and tired of irresponsible assholes like this who can't take responsibility for their own bullshit.  He gets caught red-handed, and he
decides it's "because he's black" that they were paying attention to him stealing from them??

You might say "But Chessdev...we dont know what this guy was going through....".    True.  But you dont get to be the guy stealing from your company AND the one to wear the victim sign around your neck...

...

Thornton's ex-girlfriend, Jessica Anne Brocuglio, told The Associated Press on Thursday that he had a history of racial problems with co-workers at other jobs and believed he was denied pay raises because of his race.

She said he told her: "I'm sick of having to quit jobs and get another job because they can't accept me."

[chessdev]
Assholes like this blame the world for their own failures, and then make it harder to educate people to systemic racism.  Sadly, this guy will will be the exception to the rule that the deniers will use AS the rule ("see, there is no racism...look at HIM").   Losers like this make harder for the rest of us.  And then to hurt others rather than accept his role in his situation??

I know he's gone -- so there's no chance he'll even learn to accept his role in his situation.

"Sadly, this guy will will be the exception to the rule that the deniers will use AS the rule"

I would suggest that it will be almost in direct proportion to the rationalizers.

Most of us, even, those of us who may or may not be closet, or inadvertent racists (depending on who is doing the defining) don't think this way. The problem is that those who do are the loudest and/or get the most attention. Just like the very few who will act as apologists for him will get the "air-time".

This is probably true. My fear, though, is that one such group is gonna get taken a lot more seriously than the others. Even if people making excuses for this guy get time on TV, I expect them to earn pretty swift rejections from commentators on both sides of the aisle. This may be my partisan bias talking, but I think the inadvertent racists (as I'm sure is the case - no one is intentionally irrational, right?) will get more leeway in the 'Big Tent'.

As usual I'm not clear.
The people who us this as was suggest in the quote, are racists.

lol yeah right, you should see the conversation I just had with my brother on Facebook re the overturning of Prop 8 where he made the following statement about homosexuality...

"As far as genetic homosexuality there is absolutely no conclusive proof of that and even if there were I summarily reject any insinuation that we are all predestined to any path that we have no control over. All men are born with a sin natu...re. What sin each is more inclined to is no excuse for falling into it. One might struggle with alcohol, another with violence, another with philandering, yet another with truthfulness. The bottom line is its all sin. The difference with Homosexuals is that they are the ones trying to get society to change what they are doing from something that is wrong to something that is normal. Well California gave them their answer and it wasn't "

Don't worry, no offense taken, and yes I disagree very strongly with him on most issues.

For as conservative as I am sure some around here think I am in my family I am the raving liberal.

That is one of the reasons why I argue against these loose definitions of racism and it's effect. All I need to do to see REAL racism is call Mom and get to hear a 45 minute tirade about how them Mexicans and Gays are stealing our god given country, then things really get interesting when Dad comes on the line.

He once completely seriously told me that if he had the power he would personally execute every gay, nigger, wetback, and Atheist in this country, not of course realizing that I am an Atheist.

Seriously, the most conservative poster in here looks downright sane when compared to my family.

And ZOMG that's fucking crazy. (but you knew that already)

At some level yes he does. He is certainly aware that he is rejecting empirical evidence in favor of religious truth.

Also unlike the rest of my family (see above) he actually cannot claim ignorance because like me he is actually intelligent and generally knowledgeable. My parents and sister have similar views but can honestly claim ignorance, not so my brother.

Now that said I doubt he is sitting there saying to himself "I'm being irrational on purpose"

This man may well be worse than the man in the OP.
We don't know how many soldiers died due to faulty body armor.
We have a body count for the guy in the OP.

Pretty cut and dried on this one. The problem here, apparently, was that he was able to hide his more dangerous leanings from everyone until the last minute.

Some black man made allegations of racism to try to justify a workplace shooting and now you think that people won't take racism seriously? Sometimes drivers kill other drivers for tailgating, a ridiculous reason but it doesn't cause other drivers to take tailgating less seriously or believe that tailgating is okay.

This.

Yet, chessdev is right in the sense that there are a number of people who will "use" this as a "reason" why no one can talk about racism. Or something.

I'm not following this yet, still thinking... It looks to me like an example of why we need to talk more, not less. More talking, less shooting. Although it sounds like this guy might have found talks with a psychiatrist more productive.

He isn't really different from any paranoid. In this case he used race but it could just as easily have been government, corporations or liberals. I'd put him in the same class as McVeigh.

How it is different is that I agree the incident will be used as another 'anecdote' to scare white people.

So, they thought they were being "badasses" as they "bullied" him on the job, and he killed them?

I'm sorry he didn't shoot more of them, too. They probably deserved it.
From: [identity profile] itiswelljournal.livejournal.com
No matter what the problem is or was (and that wasn't proven) , killing, attacking, violence is never the correct solution.

No one should take another person's life. If this guy thought that the way that they treated him was 'bad', what the heck is killing then? In his thought process, it is not okay to treat someone bad but it is okay to kill them? .None of that makes sense. He obviously was deranged with anger and hatred.

People who react in violence by killing people should be sentenced to very very long periods in jail --no parole.

Treating employees bad is not good (and that has not been proven-that is just what the guy said), but killing is totally not acceptable and not the answer to today's workplace problems.

We are against violence and against the death penalty, yes, even for criminals like this guy.

Jail yes, death penalty no.
