Depends what results you want them to achieve. If you want partnership with Russia, "re-starting" the relations with them goes beyond some pompous speeches (reference: Obama) and funny looking red buttons (reference: Hillary). If you want more confrontation, fair enough but be prepared for more "interesting times" and US diplomatic inroads frequently being followed by major geopolitical setbacks and viceversa, until someone in Russia decides enough is enough and they're just being stupid and are destroying their own country by putting it into the position of the world's bully. But don't expect that to happen within your lifetime.
As for the international "community", there isn't one. It doesn't exist. There are blocs of interests, and if you're referring to EU, they're pussies (I called them poodles), China is too smart to get involved directly in such things, East Asia just doesn't care and the rest of the world is irrelevant.
