Armenia siding with the Russians as well as Azerbaijan siding with the Turks is totally a cultural thing. Turkey has been pushing this agenda of the "cultural leader" of the Turkic world for ages. They're even trying to brainwash some Central Asian people into that shtick (with little success though).
Believing that Russia wants to "annex" anybody in the 21st century is naive. Sure, they wanted to use the territorial separatism card in Georgia, but not to gain territory there, it was done in order to destabilize Saakashvili (and they succeeded). No, Russia doesn't want to annex Belarus, Georgia, or anybody else. Today the forms of domination and control are much more subtle and sophisticated, as I tried to explain with this post.
