These sorts of values need to be flexible, or else you cant afford to live somewhere so pluralistic. In New York, non-compliance with your norms (and, yes, even some mockery of them) is pretty much a given.
That's the irony Hasids' live here since it is one of the most open places in the world and their odd ways are accepted and even celebrated among all of the other strange people of this city.
Now and then I guess they start wanting it to be like a small town. (though they do have a town in upstate new york. but I hear no one really like it there as much as the city.)
