So they'd have to dig a 1.5km deep hole wide enough to drop a nuke down. That would take weeks or months, during which time the leak will probably be stopped by other, less ridiculous means.

Not only is this method an odd combination of overkill and lack of knowledge of whether it would actually work, no politician who has any desire to keep his job would ever back a plan that involves setting off a nuke, especially if it would be set off so close to the US coast. In short, this is a terrible idea that will never happen.
