Actually I'm pretty sure you're right, the suicide accounts for the majority of gun deaths in Australia.
This is partly because one of the highest rates of suicide are in rual areas (e.g. farmers who have become extremely depressed during droughts due to loss of livelihood and are forced to sell properties that may have been owned for several generations), which also happens to have the highest rates of firearm ownership, because that's one of the few lifestyles where gun ownership is seen as normal or necessary in this country.
Although all that said, once we exclude intentionally killing yourself with a firearm, I believe his assertion is otherwise essentially correct.
