I wonder about the relative weight given to the simple connotation "not ethnically Hawai'ian" and the connotation "foreign" as in having come here from elsewhere or residing elsewhere. A white teacher you see every day would certainly be less foreign than the white people on the mainland, so the girls might have just seized on "Jewish" as a term that would respect that distinction. I don'know, it's a theory.
