It's interesting that when Hertzl was stumping for Zionism in the 19th century, Europe was in the process of coming to grips with the vestiges of religious bigotry in its policies towards Jews. German Jews were being integrated into polite society despite lingering racism and religious intolerance. Some Jewish leaders saw Zionism as more of a threat than anti-Semitism to Jewish integration.
In many ways, by emulating the viciousness of Western powers, Israel has not helped the situation at all. It's like Bush suppressing terrorism by invading Iraq. Instead of accomplishing the goal, it only makes matters worse.
