A lot of it is fun myth-making for tourists, and yet a lot of it is acknowledgement of our heritage, yes, along with all the upsides and shortcomings, including the atrocities committed by our ancestors. I'm not sure if you interacted with many Icelanders as you were paddling along, perhaps if you did you would've sensed how realistic and introspective they are about themselves and the heaps of historical baggage they stand upon.

Maybe food for thought and a good reason for a re-visit sometime in near future? I mean, before the whole island succumbs to the lava apocalypse that you're predicting ;)
