Your analogy is not quite right either. You're assuming that the child is one of your species, which it isn't.
Which is safer, adopt a child from a different species of whom you know nothing about (is it a lion or a sheep?), and hope it won't come back and bite you on the ass while you sleep -OR- just shoot the child while it's still young and helpless?
