The slowest coup d'état in recent memory continues its grinding path over the US constitution as it slouches towards Bethlehem, bringing bedlam to the American body politic:

www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/jan/05/trump-protesters-warned-not-to-carry-guns-as-washington-dc-calls-up-national-guard

Wherein we find that '...on Tuesday, Mr Trump falsely suggested that Mr Pence could use the occasion to nullify the result. “The vice-president has the power to reject fraudulently chosen electors...” Mr Trump wrote on Twitter.'

So I have to ask US Republican voters and the undecided folk if they think this is a precedent which they are happy seeing set? Come on guys, you can't put up with allowing this to happen. He has to go to prison now just for what he's done in this past few weeks; that's if you are serious about protecting the Constitution.

If it's all about sticking it to the Libs then please don't clothe yourselves in the Constitution. Accept that you are actually a fascist and you don't care about the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Separation of Power, the makeup of Government etc. You are just about being strong, manly, bullying types who need to beat other folk from time to time to re-enforce your machismo; and who have an unhealthy love of guns; and who aren't too sure about Black folk, because, according to the cartoons on some of your websites, Black folk's skin doesn't make good lampshades.

Have I managed to express my distaste enough, I wonder?

Even so, and to reiterate: Trump needs to go to prison after screwing with the Constitution and the electoral process; no matter what his other sins or crimes may be.

As for your query. They won't prosecute him. Even if they do, Biden will pardon him. Why? Because convicting a former president would set a "dangerous precedent". Some might argue such a step would be even *GASP* revolutionary! :-O

Setting new precedents disrupts established tradition. And you guys in the Anglo-Saxon world seem to be obsessed with tradition. Admit it, tradition and precedence is more important to your societies than the rule of law, or justice and fairness could ever possibly be.

New stuff brings unclarity and risk, that's for sure. You never know where it could end up. Better stay where you are, no matter how bad a place that might be.

Well, this is clearly one tradition that has to be junked.

It looks like several states, counties and US Attorneys' offices are all viewing DT-45's activities with no small degree of interest. How best to encourage them to keep going to the needed, logical conclusions? ("Best" includes "remaining true to spirit and letter of existing law" here.)

Not you. I'm interpreting the Americans' reluctance to prosecute their former presidents even when prosecution is warranted. I honestly cannot think of a more sensible explanation than their fondness of tradition.

Trump ain't the first president to break norms and traditions.

Wow. Not setting a new precedent is in itself setting a new precedent. We went full precedent circle here! Some traditionalist heads must be spinning like crazy!

Your Numenorean reference reminds me that I can't wait for the new Amazon LOTR series.

I can.

They didn't want to unleash the can of worms of regular politicization of the judicial process, which as per the GOP endless trials of Hillary over a non-scandal happened anyway regardless of what was or wasn't.

That excuse got shot between the eyes with the fascist fuckery happening on the Hill now.

Legality is dead.

I'm with Mahnmut on this one. Trump was right that he could shoot someone at 5th Avenue and get away with it. Of course all his efforts to turn the election around will fail, regardless of the ridiculous extents he'll go to. On the other hand, all his actions will soon be forgotten, while remaining without consequences for him. As for the American society, the last 4 years will have long-lasting effects, I'm afraid.

He deserves to be prosecuted and quite frankly I'd like to see him go to jail, but he won't, because like Mahnmut said, that would set a "dangerous precedent" and our government over here does in fact seem to favor that sort of thing more than law and justice. It's embarrassing and disgusting, and this is one of the reasons why the rest of the world tends to think my country is a boil on the ass of the planet, and they're not wrong, really.
