I would equate it to the Jewish experience in Russia in the Pale of Settlement under the Tsars. No overt intent to murder but looting, pogroms, lynching, and all the cultural bugaboos that Europe attached to Jews from before the Christian era fixated on black people and black bodies. Hence the staggering bodycount from lashing out due to white paranoia on a regular basis continuing into the present.
That is true, and yet I've found that bringing up that colonialism in the US sense is replacing a European empire with our own variant and that the locals don't forget the European variant just because we take over for it, and that in fact our taking over for them is no small part of where hating us *starts* tends to fare....poorly.
