While Europe and North America are stuck in the second (and maybe third) wave of the pandemic, the official Covid infection rate in China has stayed amazingly low. There are no new death cases, and the daily infection numbers almost never pass beyond 100. How is this possible? What makes China deal so well with the second wave?

Well, one reason is that the authorities have been able to quickly respond with quarantine measures and mass testing in every new local infection outbreak, like the one in the north-western region of Xinjiang (yes, the Uyghur area). In Kashgar for example, 4 million people were tested within a couple of days.

Instantaneous mass testing, strict isolation of the infected and the sick - that's how China has contained the second wave. What's more, they've imposed strict control on who's entering the country, with a 2-week quarantine for newcomers who spend that time in specially designated Covid hotels.

Easy to do that when you are China )
