Some might argue New Zealand spent $17 million on a failed flag referendum, and now it wants to change its name, another waste of time and money, yadda yadda yadda.
Controversial call to officially rename New Zealand
Well, context can be tricky: New Zealand/Aotearoa is already officially bilingual and most place names have Māori names already. Government correspondence must be in both languages and signs and maps are already bilingual.
It wouldn't be a huge change.
In principle, it is not a failed attempt if the government sticks to what the referendum result was, it is called democracy. I think there might have been more people wanting a change if the shortlist of alternatives weren’t somewhat stale.
