"The cure for poverty has a name, in fact: it's called the empowerment of women. If you give women some control over the rate at which they reproduce, if you give them some say, take them off the animal cycle of reproduction to which nature and some doctrine—religious doctrine condemns them, and then if you'll throw in a handful of seeds perhaps and some credit, the floor of everything in that village, not just poverty, but education, health, and optimism will increase. It doesn't matter; try it in Bangladesh, try it in Bolivia, it works—works all the time."
-Christopher Hitchens

Ivanka Trump says developing countries must do more to empower women to get U.S. aid

Now there is a way to use US aid as leverage that appears a tad smarter than the whole Ukraine debacle...

But it's rich, coming from a countr that has made a point of not funding most international efforts that involve family planning outreach and related education, because of Congressional prohibition on using any taxpayer dollars "for abortion". It seems to me Trump was careful not to get into that, and it was probably easy enough because the venue was IMF/World Bank and the focus more on private investment initiatives.

Still it struck me as some doublethink going on there because a country like the USA with current official policies at home leaning towards the old "barefoot in the kitchen and pregnant" school of thought has a lot of nerve telling underdeveloped countries to empower women or get lost...

However, I think that the WeFi organisation's focus is on private investment, and apparently that idea is picking up some steam in the financial community. The idea is of course economic empowerment of women, but that's likely to involve at least some efforts towards making it easier for women to work outside the home in their childbearing years, e.g. daycare in urban areas where manufacturing opportunities will draw rural women to work even if they are already parents. Baby steps, so to speak...

By the way, does Ivanka's warning apply to the Saudis? I hope it does. But I am not holding my breath...
