The UK will be banning the sales of new gasoline and diesel cars from 2040 onwards. Even the hybrid cars that have both an electric and internal combustion engine will be unwanted. France and Norway also have similar laws (Oslo is going to become a fossil-free city), and China, the world's largest car manufacturer, will soon introduce a compulsory quota for electric cars. Lots of voices in Germany are calling for similar solutions already. Etc. It seems the time of conventional engines is running out.
The prevailing position behind this process is that there is no other way but to quit fossil fuels, otherwise we wouldn't be able to deal with the ecological problems of the modern day. Transportation is the only sector in recent years that has failed to considerably lower the carbon emissions. In the meantime, if an electric car is not charged with clean energy, its use won't help change matters much, either. If the electricity for that car is produced from coal, it'll be just as "eco" as any other internal combustion engine. Besides, various special and rare materials are used for the production of electric accumulators, which isn't exactly an eco-friendly process.
