In several states controlled by Republican state houses and governors, there seems to be a concerted effort to restrict voter registrations, or raise the bars for citizens to vote. Case in point: Florida was the deciding factor in the 2000 election, and in 2004 George Bush carried by a definitive margin.

New voter drives over the next four years set the pace: Democratic voter registration drives outpaced Republicans by 2:1, giving them a 650,000 edge that put Florida firmly in the Obama column very early on election night in 2008. Newly registered voters went Democratic by a 2:1 margin in 2008.

"An act relating to sexual activities involving animals; creating s. 828.126, F.S.; providing definitions; prohibiting knowing sexual conduct or sexual contact with an animal; prohibiting specified related activities; providing penalties; providing that the act does not apply to certain husbandry, conformation judging, and veterinary practices; providing an effective date."

Now of course I'm sure that most of you will respond to this in a typical Hur Dur Stupid Republicans way but I wonder if this might not be the right time for you to reconsider whether this is something which even needs a law?

I mean yes Bestiality is abnormal and deviant and does indeed pose several public health issues, plus it is arguable that the rights of the animals are being violated, however is criminal sanction actually required here? Could it not be treated as a public health issue with interventions for those who are found engaging in it?

Inspired by comments received in my previous post

We as a society have an ethical obligation to both respect individual rights and protect our most vulnerable segment. But occasionally these two tenets are at odds with each other and we’re faced with the dilemma of balancing them.

We can look at almost any crime and find a root cause as to what turned the person to commit such an act. Criminals will always have a justification for their actions, the question becomes whether we accept it as valid reasoning or not.
