There is so much to this story I don’t know where to begin. I am going to a poor job of presenting this but I hope it will inspire a more thoughtful post, or at least a discussion of what is going on here.
The information:
Debate raged in Washington yesterday, as the U.S. Federal Trade Commission's workshop on journalism in the Internet age separately hosted both Rupert Murdoch and Arianna Huffington.
Newspaper publishers reeling from the Internet-spurred decline of print advertising may join Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. in considering blocking Google from displaying their news articles.http://www.newsmax.com/insidecover/google_murdoch_pay_wall/2009/11/25/290941.html
The Federal Communications Commission is already reconsidering rules that prevent a company from owning newspapers and TV stations in a single market.
Federal and state officials this year have explored how the government might play a role in helping ease the financial travails of news organizations. Sen. Benjamin Cardin (D., Md.) this spring proposed a bill that would allow newspapers to operate as tax-exempt institutions. Congress has held several hearings about the financial challenges facing the industry
Microsoft (MSFT) has cut a deal with News Corp (NWSA) to ban Google's (GOOG) spybots from scanning Rupert Murdoch's news sites for content and headlines. Since most business and tech press reporters are painfully aware of Google's impact on the media's business model, we don't suppose they'd be preoccupied with anything else.
