Oh, the irony...
24/6/18 09:44Behold "Restaurant-gate"!
Sarah Sanders is upset a restaurant wouldn’t serve her. She’s OK with it happening to gays.
"I happen to believe that food establishments should offer their goods to anyone willing to pay for them. Sanders does not. She thinks it’s OK, for example, for a business to hang a sign in their window saying they won’t serve gay couples. This is why, on one level, her very public dig at the owner of the Red Hen, which set off a torrent of hate tweets and threats her way, is ridiculous. It’s hypocrisy."
Damn right. What goes around comes around, doesn't it?
Some may say this restaurant should expect a backlash and a boycott from Republican customers. But not so fast. Actually this place is not gonna be closing down anytime soon. It’s a 26 seat farm to table place in a town of 7000 people who overwhelmingly voted for Hillary. Lexington is a very liberal town, they fully support this restaurant. I suppose they'll probably be accused of hypocrisy too now, since they'd now have to change their stance on gay-cake-gate(!?), since they've effectively done what they had beenprotesting against (namely, barring people from accessing services based on their political, religious or sexual preferences). Either way, this is ultimately what you get when you have an administration that sows discord and division throughout society, and does not even bother to pretend that it's doing otherwise.
Like the article said, "On another level, restaurant-gate is an example of the Trump administration’s unique commitment to courting divisiveness. Donald Trump doesn’t even pretend to speak to or for all Americans. Rhetorically, there hasn’t been a more disrespectful administration in 150 years. But when Sanders wants dinner, the White House is all for mutual respect. Either way, the base laps it up." Proof of that toxic result comes from comment sections across the social networks. Just a few examples:
Exhibit 1: "I would love to see a bus load of Republicans go in there sit..wait..when ready to order all get up and leave..and when leaving start yelling owner is a bigot..lol..There has to be some of my military buddies around there who would love to do this. Make sure it's posted..?."
Exhibit 2: "Better than that... Stage the place with clandestine MAGA patriots. Wait until all served, then put on red MAGA hats and shout out "USA, USA, USA...." Of course, all the phones would be recording & posting to twitter, Youtube, and Facebook. Don't stop the chanting until owner kicks everybody out."
But seriously. At least on paper, it is absolutely legal to refuse service to anyone (ie Freedom of association). However, in a free, civilized society, that proverbial door swings both ways. A patron has no right to a business's services, but a business has no right to patronage?
In any case, that restaurant owner may've done Ms Sanders a great favor, possibly preventing her from having to eat a few grinded cockroaches garnered with spittle in her food.
Btw, what's this obsession with putting the "gate" suffix everywhere?
