I understand the feelings of republicans, though I think they're wrong. As it happens, I think Her Maj has been, without any slightest shadow of a doubt, the single best head of state in the C20th, and that list includes Edward VII, FDR, and Nelson Mandela; all of whom, in any other circumstances would have had a pretty good claim to the position. But I also accept in this judgement that I am biased.

Mind you, the monarchy is not a gilded cage I would aspire to; all that damn soldiering and meeting maybe slightly less respectable heads of state. I mean, the poor lass had to put up with Idi Amin, which is more than most of us have had to do. And now I guess she will have to meet Trump too, poor thing. Of the two I reckon Idi to be the most entertaining; though on a reciprocal visit I'd be wary of eating from his table. His culinary tastes, if reports are true, would leave me both shuddering and strangely appetite-less.

I doubt I could have shaken hands with Amin, even if protocol required it. It is my opinion that HM is a star. And I know you guys won't get rid of her while she's around. But William is pretty damn cool as well, poor bloke. (The thing is it's a whole life sentence; if someone was to try to abolish it on the grounds of cruelty to the individual tasked with the role I might be forced to concur.)
