The fact is the folk in power balance what the voters need, what the voters want, and what the voters think they want as told to them by the media.
And they don't want to pay for any of this stuff, and the government can't actually explain the complexities of dynamic social interactions in words of one syllable, whereas the average media baron with a desire to increase circulation, advertising revenue, and influence will pander to lowest common denominator prejudices sometimes in words of two syllables like "Gotcha".
The thing is, the "Elite" of which you are speaking are managing to alienate the professional "Elite". This leads to Robespierre. And they don't see it.
