This is another reason we should have remained in. We do soldiering quite well, and we should have been part of this; with France the other major part of it. With the British and the French navies amalgamated, we would have had two proud naval traditions as brothers(and sisters)-in-arms.

Regiments amalgamate. As do squadrons. As do navies. The Royal Navy is made up of the English and Scottish navies. When regiments amalgamate they keep the battle honours of their constituent regiments.

It could have worked brilliantly. Point us in the right direction and we are good at that sort of thing. My countrymen rather put paid to that. Alas and alack.

It has to happen anyway. Give the French the lead in naval stuff, and give them a say with Germany and Italy about the land and air forces. Spain and Greece can only benefit from a "defence Schengen" too. If you have to, just wait until we have articled ourselves to the mast, and no longer have a say.
