I'm not too sure what to think on this. What is everyone elses perspectives? Serious problem? Or just a mountain made from a mole-hill by conspiracy theorists?

I joined this community because as stated "A place to discuss politics without egomeniac mods"  I hope to find this to be true.

Most countries have some sort of compulsory military service. I think Americans should have mandatory customer service - out of high school everyone has to work for three years serving the public.

It would provide motivation for getting an education and might, though probably not, teach some manners or perspective in dealing with the rest of society.

I certainly hope it would not teach the same kind of bad habits that the military teaches. Rather than being a source of unification, military regimentation tends to enhance and enforce differences. It's one of the vectors for teaching racism.

had the choice between civil and military service, went with the latter. don't care either way how this plays out in the US. see no current plans being put forward for anything like it.

This is perpetual hobby horse of a lot of "we mean it for your own good," politicians. It never goes anywhere, it never will. The logistics are prohibitive. Plus there is no market for it. Plus, we fought a bloody four year war and reduced a third of our nation to ashes to eliminate slavery. I see no groudswell of support for its return.

Let's have a gender-neutral conscription. Let's see women get a chance to be blown up in horrible ways as much as men do. They can shoot a rifle as well as men can, so by all means, let's bring back the draft and bring it back for the womenfolk, too.

A bit off topic here, but just so you know. (I didnt wanna open a whole separate thread so i thought the place is appropriate here). FYI, hunterkirk has been unblocked from returning here, if i could call it so. He'll be duly informed about that too. The first step on the wrong side of civil conduct would mean he'll be gone forever.

lol. I promise I wont stir up too much trouble. I mainly just meant it in the sense that I wont get kicked for my perspectives on politics. From what i've read in other posts/topics it doesnt seem that that will be a problem at all. On the same token, I respect others points of view while always keeping an open mind to rationality.

I think i will come to like this place well.

I'm sure they would love to have compulsory "volunteer" service but public opinion and the Constitution are against them.

Current military technology makes mass numbers of soldiers unnecessary (short of a land war in Asia) so they can't even attempt to piggyback this on military registration/conscription.

I think peering at why they'd like like to control your life for a couple of year as you enter (legal) adulthood tells you all you need to know about this plan.
