To comment successfully I would need a better appreciation of the US university system and the present tranche of undergraduates. However, it is my understanding that the elite institutions, (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, et al) encourage critical thinking in the way that the elite universities in th UK do. Maybe such teaching/encouragement is only for those that attend the elite universities, and not for the general middle-rankers, who will, no doubt, be the enforcers of the groupthink mentality which the elite in your country thinks it advantageous to foster amongst those not like themselves. Or it may be that the narrow perspectives of the groupthink mentality are endemic to American society at large.

There is definitely a divide between the Americans and non-Americans on this comm when it comes to the kind of groupthink which seems to take place; but in general all folk seem capable of such meta-mobocratic behaviour no matter whether from the left or the right, or from America or Europe.

Interesting perspective, nevertheless.
