How do you call the following syndrome? You go to someone who's been known as one of the best professionals in their field, and expect a good service. You soon realize they're in no way a good professional. But you keep going to them, just because most people keep going there, and they insist he's one of the best professionals. You're not happy at all with the service, but you still keep going, and you tell everybody who inquires about your impression that this is indeed the best professional in their field.

Is there a name for this (apart from "plain dumb")?

Appeal to authority maybe? Or some extreme version thereof.

That would be my guess.

Some variant of the Emperor's New Clothes. Well, it sounds as if you have the same tailor, if you see what I mean?

I'd just quietly find a better professional. And, having found one, very very quietly recommend them to your most intimate acquaintances. No song and dance about it, no backstabbing or badmouthing. Just find yourself someone solidly competent and professional.

Well, the old saying goes: "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result." ;)

Reminds me of a barbecue restaurant I live near - it's top 5, top 10, and maybe once or twice #1 in the country, in more than a few magazines and online polls. It's the first place anyone - even me, unless I stop and think about it - thinks of when an out-of-towner or new-in-towner wants a BBQ recommendation.

But....it just isn't that good....

I see it the other way, too, a tendency for one to claim to dislike something most claim to dislike, despite actually liking it. It's like these things build a social momentum that's impossible to budge.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiral_of_silence maybe? Fear (subconscious or not) of the social repercussions (real or, most likely, imagined) of breaking from majority opinion? Mabe related, at least?

Combination of habit, and being comfortable with the known vs uncomfortable with the unknown.

DAILY QUOTE:
"The NATO charter clearly says that any attack on a NATO member shall be treated, by all members, as an attack against all. So that means that, if we attack Greenland, we'll be obligated to go to war against ... ourselves! Gee, that's scary. You really don't want to go to war with the United States. They're insane!"
