Most of us may have already heard of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which is usually being done for noble causes, for the purpose of raising awareness, or gathering charitable financial donations, etc. What we may not realise though, is that behind the celeb buzz surrounding this new viral phenomenon, there is a huge amount of failed attempts that are cut out more often than filmed. Some do manage to sneak through, though, and go as viral as the original, eventually...

This is getting out of hand!

PSV Eindhoven get drenched by water cannons after accepting Ajax's Ice Challenge nomination (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2731940/Ice-Bucket-Challenge-difference-PSV-Eindhoven-drenched-water-cannons-accepting-Ajax-s-nomination.html)

First there was the Harlem Shake, and now this. What's next, setting one's fart on fire?

Aside from becoming viral there is not much comparison. This has helped raise a LOT of money for a worthy cause.

Becoming viral is a pretty big similarity, IMO.

Yeah it is exactly like lolcats, or happy slapping because you know all viral things are practically identical!

So, at what point did you unilaterally decide to arbitrarily re-define the meaning of "similar", to suddenly start to mean "exactly like" and "practically identical"?

A little after you decided that the Harlem shake and lighting your own farts was similar to something raising millions for charity?

Oh, now I see you're using "similar" instead of "the same" or "identical". That's an encouraging sign that you're at last on the right track to getting the point. So which is it, after all? You still seem kind of confused.

I did already explain exactly where the similarity was and how far it goes, didn't I? You were the one who chose to go for the hyperbole.

There's no obstacle for the Harlem Shake or even setting one's fart on fire to become a viral meme that can be used for doing A LOT of charity. The two things are not mutually exclusive, regardless of how hard you attempt to present them as if they were.

Oh, now I see you're using "similar" instead of "the same" or "identical".

I don't read that in the conversation.

So which is it, after all?

That silly behaviour can be used for good results, which is why this ice bucket challenge and the Harlem Shake meme can be distinguished.

(Personally, I can't stand the ice bucket challenge, but I'm glad that it appeals to some people and they've loosened their purse strings as a result).

Well, I hope Sir Ian McKellen doesn't light his own farts. Fighting the Balrog was enough fire for a lifetime ;)

After seeing Sir Ian's video, I was really hoping his dear friend Patrick Stewart would do one.

And he did, and it was glorious.

(Speaking of charity, have you been aware of Patrick Stewart's amazing work towards combating domestic violence against women, and PTSD in returning soldiers?)

(EDIT: sorry, the video I linked seems to show it twice for some reason.)

DAILY QUOTE:
"The NATO charter clearly says that any attack on a NATO member shall be treated, by all members, as an attack against all. So that means that, if we attack Greenland, we'll be obligated to go to war against ... ourselves! Gee, that's scary. You really don't want to go to war with the United States. They're insane!"
