Romania does not really have a project to assimilate Moldova, despite the fact that 71.5% of the population are ehtnically Romanian. It was a sacrificial territory at the end of WWII and that legacy is not about to be changed soon. There is no viable method to assimilate the poorest country in Europe into the second (or third) poorest. In fact given the aggressive russian policy lately, it's probably better to have a buffer country between RO and RU. Any Moldovan of known accomplishments in the last few decades have moved to Romania, and in general the reality is that Romania has no foreign policy of notable importance, so it's unlikely they would mediate the neighbours' integration into Europe. Most likely MD will fragment further and serve as a border country to the RU empire.
