The Egregious Flop That Gave Brazil The Lead In Opening World Cup Match

''If that was a penalty, we should be playing basketball,'' said Croatia coach Niko Kovac. ''Those kinds of fouls are penalized there.''

The referee gifts to the hosts are so boringly predictable. I almost guessed the exact score and the exact way this match would be spoiled by the referee.

Still I don't think they will win this world cup. They may be pushed by the referees even to the final, but they won't win.

A clairvoyant octopus elephant (http://time.com/2827316/elephant-world-cup/) told me so. :-)

What a bunch of fucking divers

If this is how the World Cup is going to proceed, I may as well revert to watching rugby union tests now.

OTOH if Croatia is as good as they looked, they should have no problems with Mexico and Cameroon (even my highly nationalistic friends are wondering how/why Mexico is even in the tournament)(of course that doesn't mean that the freeways won't be deserted this morning since Mexico plays at 8:30 our time..darn I wish I was driving "over the hil"l this morning). will note that the commentators ( a Brit and a Scot) were as harsh on the Croatian goalie as they were on the ref,

The match starts at 22:00 here, strange that it starts at ~:30 at your place. :-)

I'm always amused by that habit of UK sports channels inviting a Brit and a Scot to comment. The mixture of accents is killing!

It wasn't just the ridiculous penalty after the Fred dive. First there was a Neymar elbowing of Modric which normally should've been rewarded with a red card, but the hosts' darling only got yellow, and remained on the pitch, then went on to equalize and then convert the penalty. And then at 2-1 there was that controversial call and the disallowed goal after the ref figured the Croatian striker had committed a foul at the Brazilian goalkeeper. After all that, it was pretty easy for Brazil.

If they think the refs are going to push them all the way to the final, they're gravely mistaken. They'll be cruelly landed back down into reality by the first solid team they encounter, be it Spain or Holland.

Pretty much. And let's not forget that Brazil's 3rd goal came after a blatant foul in the middle of the field. Ridiculousness all throughout. FIFA = mafia.

I started watching this game in Brazil's camp. By the time the penalty was awarded, I was pretty livid.

I thought FIFA were a bunch of corrupt dangleberries, as our Aussie chums might put it, but I did think they cared for the game on the pitch.

Bad refereeing and linesman's decisions in the Mexico Cameroon match too.

This is the World Cup, get it right. Or give the administration of the game back to the folk who care about it rather than the fucking bean-counting money men with Napoleonic delusions we have at the moment.

There's a bunch of Olympic disciplines that are only nominally called "sport", whereas the refs decide who wins and who loses solely based on subjective view. Starting with all the gymnastics stuff, and water jumps, and figure skating, etc etc etc. One could almost predict the final standings in those sports long before the competition has begun, depending on the influence of the respective lobbies in the respective governing bodies of those "sports".

And a whole bunch of medals are distributed through that system.

At least the NBA had the modesty to call itself the National Basketball League! With baseball (peace be the holy game) we call it the "World Series"!

Someday Earth is gonna get shit for "Miss Universe" contest too, I can only hope.

If I had the time or will to I would desaturate the image, and dress up the center guy as Abraham Lincoln giving the Gettysburg Address. Maybe throw a cannon in there somewhere.

DAILY QUOTE:
"The NATO charter clearly says that any attack on a NATO member shall be treated, by all members, as an attack against all. So that means that, if we attack Greenland, we'll be obligated to go to war against ... ourselves! Gee, that's scary. You really don't want to go to war with the United States. They're insane!"
