There seems to be a certain political tracking between the values of the Vatican and conservative values. When the Vatican opposes gay marriage, conservatives do also. When the Vatican opposes health care for poor women, so do conservatives.
In San Francisco, more and more religious organizations are coming to openly embrace same-gender marriage. It may not be the greatest number of congregants, but it is on the rise. We've even had support from individual communicants of the Franciscan and Benedictine persuasions.
