No one has found out how to help Denmark's falling birth rate. Until now. Spies Travels announces a competition where you have to make a baby to win. ;)
It kind of bothers me that with all the over population in the world, countries are talking about babies. I know that there's a whole lot of social integration stuff that comes with growing your own citizens but it still makes me uncomfortable.
We both know that's a false equivalency, but I am involved in a community development project in Cambodia.
I think it's a very valid discussion; on the one hand there are more people in the world than the world can handle, but on the other if we completely supplanted our population growth from birth to immigration then there are bound to be some massive integration problems. We both live in (or lived in, not sure where you are now...) societies that have undergone massive ethnic change from a fairly homogenous base in the last few decades. I personally think we're better for it, but one thing I've noticed is that it's always the first generation born here that fully integrate. I think a lot of that has to do with growing up through shared cultural experiences like education and popular culture. I think I reach a point where I realise that to be able to sustainably increase immigration, you also need to increase birth rates. I'm really, really unsure about this issue though, because there's problems on all sides.
I asked, because I've been seeing way too many people not acting upon what they preach, so you may understand where my skepticism is coming from, whenever I hear someone pontificating and generally theorizing this way.
I understand, I wasn't trying to pontificate though, this is a real social issue (one that's been a big deal here for a decade) and I have genuinely mixed feelings on the matter. I've taught refugees and I appreciate the genuine difficulties that they are going to have for their entire life because their formative years were spent somewhere very different. I have also, however, taught the kids of refugees and have seen how having that experience so close in your family (but not happening to you) is a powerful motivator. The differences between these two cohorts was immense; the former I was teaching essentially a remedial class and the latter was at a school that only accepts the top 3% academically of students. I'm pretty comfortable that my concerns aren't coming from racism but something very real that gets ignored by a lot of people because they think it's racist. The economy needs more people, that growth has to come from somewhere, and the most efficient place is through growing your own (or being able to poach highly qualified migrants), not through letting in lots of people from developing nations who need your help more. It's a fine balance, and one I think my country is very wrong on (or at least, we need to stop the offshore concentration camps).
"The NATO charter clearly says that any attack on a NATO member shall be treated, by all members, as an attack against all. So that means that, if we attack Greenland, we'll be obligated to go to war against ... ourselves! Gee, that's scary. You really don't want to go to war with the United States. They're insane!"

The glory of the Spear-Danes... In times past. It becomes a more poignant epic with each headline from the EU.
