The story is thus: a former Soviet cruise ship was abandoned in harbor in Canada. After a year of financial wrangling, the Canadian government seized the ship and sold it to scrapper...who proceeded to lose it at sea. The government located the ship and failed to return it to port after determining the ship posed no threat to the coast or maritime interests.
Since then, two lifeboat beacons have been detected on different days. Since the beacons go off when they hit the water, it is surmised that these beacons went off when their lifeboats were dropped into the ocean by storms. It is also surmised that the failure of other beacons to go off means they are still on the ship which is assumed to be afloat. A radar profile matching the size of the ship has also been detected but recon planes sent by Britain could not locate it.
This means the ship is likely still adrift in the North Atlantic, more than 2/3 of the way to the UK and could be washed ashore.
But what makes this fun: cannibal rats. The ship, after a year in harbor, undoubtedly had a substantial rat population. After a year at sea, the rats have certainly turned cannibal, eating each other to stay alive. Tabloids is Britain are dubbing the "threat" as the Ghost Ship of Cannibal Rats. Assuming it does wash ashore, surviving rat passengers will be quite a feral handful for scrappers.
Apart from sounding like a bad movie on SyFy, this has me wondering: Libertarians keep posing suggestions to create floating "islands" in international waters for the establishment of a Libertopia...can we give them this ship? Alternately, assuming he is not already in prison, could we find the ship, and put the ex-captain of the Costa Concordia on board...so he can sink it?

From:(frozen) Cannibal rats on a drifting ship - how symbolic
Date: 27/1/14 01:56 (UTC)Oh leave them be, it's their corner of the internet. This community is becoming another left flavored echo chamber in here anyway.
Too bad, so sad. Where has all the robust dissent gone? I wish I could fix it, but I just don't care about what people I don't know think of me.
Meanwhile, like most others, just content to keep reading and waiting for some story that does not somehow take a jab at the US, and chuckle along with the chucklers. Hey, none of it is to be taken serious, yo! Island nations are the new Tin foil hats of dismissal to a valid ingredient to the essence of freedom.
