economists ... dismiss any symptom of unsustainable practices with words like "externality"
Categorizing something as an externality is not a dismissal, but an admission that the item in question cannot be adequately described or measured within a particular model. Regardless of what economists endorse or dismiss, politicians always have the option of taking action to address a known problem. If a problem is being ignored, blame the politicians, not the economists.
