Okay, so shouldn't we be adopting them slowly now (as we are), just so we can work out the kinks in the tech while we still can?
If private industry would like to continue to develop and invest in them in hopes that they can become a viable option, great. No one should stop them, nor should the government play any favorites in the matter, up to and including discouraging use of viable fuels.

The contrast between the two is not diametric opposition, but rather the difference between blowing a lot of other people's money on a wish as opposed to saying "there is a problem coming, and we should be considering the best way to deal with it when the time comes."
