I recently came across a collection of amazing roads "you have to drive in your lifetime".

Which reminded me of a recent trip I took in the countryside. It was so gorgeous, so picturesque! And looked so dangerous. The road was literally hanging over the sea cliffs, the waves furiously beating against the rocks hundreds of feet below. That was in the Cape peninsula, here in South Africa. And in a way it reminded me of West Ireland.

So could you share a story or two about the most amazing places you have driven through? With pictures if possible (either yours or ganked from the Interwebs).

Meanwhile, here are some of the sights from that list.

Big Sur, the Pacific coastline of California

Furka pass in Switzerland

The Atlantic road in Norway

Tianment Mountain in Hunan, China

The Seven Mile Bridge at Florida Keys, Florida

Chapman's Peak Drive at Western Cape, South Africa

Stelvio pass in the Eastern Alps, Italy

The Guoliang Tunnel road in Henan, China

Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Australia

Sani Pass in kwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

I'm surprised they left out Lombard Street in San Francisco:

Too short. Mostly fun for skateboarders.

Tourists flock to it, but you can just feel the regret a mile away as they start making their way down.

I can make it three turns, then I need to bail.

Been there, this is the most miserable road to drive on ever. Me and my family walked there so we didn't experience it ourselves, but the traffic is so backed up because of the turns and the tourists getting out of the cars to take photos!

So what's the big deal? By the looks of it, seems like there are plenty of options to bypass that part of town.

Which is why they should be prepared for the queues. When you go to a popular tourist site, you're prepared to wait in line.

The streets were not designed for it. Its a tough one to drive down, and I am not sure why anyone WANTS to ruin their brakes and xmission.

I distinctly remember someone getting out and walking in front of and in-between one of the cars, it was her husband driving it and she wanted to take pictures of it on the way down.

Don't take this as me complaining of course, I walked. The people driving provided plenty of entertainment. ;)

I've always been curious too, the homes that are along this road, considering the location and the fact that this is California... how astronomically expensive?

Grossglockner Pass, Austria.

I've also been on the PCH and the Flagler Highway.

We spent the night in Zell am See and it rained all night long. But on the Grossglockner it was all snow, so it was like driving through a fairy tale. When we were there (mid 80's) they were still shoveling a lot of this road by hand. Not much need that time, the roads were too warm for it to stick except right at the crest.

Wow. Looks like you lose/gain elevation really fast too. Very stunning road. Sounds just ideal.

Good grief that is stunning:

I'd love to go to all of those places!

I'm happy to say I've driven on the Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys, but not since they rebuilt it. I think it's about time for another trip south. :)

Top Gear declared the Transfagarasan Highway in Romania the best road in the world, and I have to agree they made a good case:

Good stuff starts at 4 minutes 50 seconds.

The best drive of my life was the Kahekili Highway on West Maui:

The green section is epic:

Just to be clear, I don't DO "5 mph":

LOL, the Transfagarasan is a waking nightmare of potholes, aggro truck drivers and a complete lack of road signals, punctuated by gut-wrenching curves and deadly roadside hazards. I've driven it twice and the best thing about is that it's avoided by most auto drivers and also not very long. It is pretty though. ;-)

Gotta love A1A though, miles and miles of beach and some of Florida's most interesting cities. One day I want to do a bike trek across it but I have to train and prepare for it first.

Want to go to the Keys so badly :(

The Atlantic Road looks cool, too, though. Reminds me of the landscape in my current game of Minecraft. Lots of really rocky islands and some mountains right near the ocean.

One of my bucket list items is to do the PCH. I have a friend who has traveled out to Big Sur a few times and has loved it.

In fact, I could probably add a lot of these drives to my bucket list (which is technically non-existent, though I have a lot of things in mind for it). (Edit: I just started a Bucket list on Google Docs.)

I've driven down the Florida Keys and back. That was gorgeous, though I had to drive both ways, so I didn't get to enjoy as much of the view as if I had been in the passenger seat. I was surprised to see the signs about Key Deer - though we didn't see any.

"The NATO charter clearly says that any attack on a NATO member shall be treated, by all members, as an attack against all. So that means that, if we attack Greenland, we'll be obligated to go to war against ... ourselves! Gee, that's scary. You really don't want to go to war with the United States. They're insane!"
