Artwork, autographs, cigarette boxes, beetles, sports cards, calendars, toy cars, dried flowers, coins, post stamps, spoons, souvenirs, beer labels, trains and railways, you name it... What sort of stuff did you use to collect, or are still collecting these days? Care to share? How big is your collection? Did you splash a lot of cash for all that stuff?
Me? I was mostly about those Matchbox cars. Cute little beauties made of metal, which everyone here was so crazy about.

We used to exchange one car for another, compare them, paint and re-paint them, and make races with them.

And we dreamt of having one of those cars for real. And some of us did. Because here's what I have now IRL:

Your turn?

Date: 5/7/13 21:22 (UTC)I haven't had much time to read recently, so I have mostly been reading short novels & short story collections, but my main literary passion is for poetry. I also like to read about history, however, & one of my bookcases is full of books about Germanic & Nordic mythology, Nazi Germany & Richard Wagner, so somebody looking at it who didn't know me already could easily get the wrong idea.

Date: 6/7/13 02:58 (UTC)I've given up on just "everything I read/every book I've owned" on my shelf and started on rare and interesting. I've started a collection of Atlases (got about 10 from the 30s-90s and some 19th C maps and a 17th C world map etching).

Trilobite fossils. Not expensive, but can be! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trilobite)
Roman imperial coins. Mostly bronze ones because gold and silver are too expensive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_currency)
CDs (I still buy them :-/), and books (whenever on sale, or via Berkshire's Outlet on the Internet). And a friend sends me his review copies free.
and I must admit, very naughty videos. (coughs).

Date: 5/7/13 20:44 (UTC)The one thing I actively try to collect are coins from around the world. I don't look for anything rare or particularly old, but I love finding coins from somewhere I haven't seen yet. When I worked in retail, this was always really easy, because tourists would always accidently pay with foreign money. I'd always be sure to keep a lot of change on me so I could "buy" any international coins that had ended up in the drawer later. It's a little harder now to find them now that I work in an office, but that's just more incentive for me to go travelling, and keep some of the money from the trip. :)

Date: 5/7/13 20:55 (UTC)When I had money and a good job I tried to invest in some antiques, though really I think the only thing that has any value may be my arts-n-crafts era dresser. Also have a modest collection of swords plus a crossbow and a Roman legion helmet.

Date: 5/7/13 21:08 (UTC)It opened my eyes to the world and made me incredibly thirsty for knowledge in many domains: from geography to history to science to literature. It was awesome, in that it was designed for children and teenagers, and yet it introduced them/us to an enormous palette of topics. It is where I heard about Lord of the Rings for the first time; it's where I read about the great geographic discoveries, and the founders and old rulers of my country, and so much about animals. The adaptations of popular sci-fi books made me curious to read them; etc etc.

I collect Monkey Grip Tube Patch kits
Date: 5/7/13 21:17 (UTC)They were a local company before they went national. One of them things that was always around in our garage when I was young.
I have about 20 pieces, which is 80% of the repair kit collection.
I also like small unique boxes.

Date: 5/7/13 23:26 (UTC)I have a mini-collection of turtle figurines. It happened by accident, when some friends went on vacation (separately) and brought me back some turtle figurines as gifts... which was funny again because I had bought myself a turtle figurine that same week when I was on my own vacation. None of us had consulted about it beforehand, and I've never had a particular interest in turtles, so it seemed like a strange coincidence, one of those times when I wondered if the universe was telling me something. I haven't gone crazy with it, but I've picked up a few more turtles here and there...

I have a baseball with MOST of the Pittsburg Pirates, but of course NOT Clemente...My dad got it at a dodger game back in '60 (the year they won the WS).

Date: 6/7/13 03:26 (UTC)Starting with Straight Arrow Indian Utility cards (in Shredded wheat) and marbles way back in the 50s through comics (I had all but about 6 of all the Marvels thru '78) and trading cards til my present passion of pin-backs (mostly comic character driven like: http://www.marklansdown.com/pinbacks/index-frames.html) and Big Little Books.
My major problem is what to do with my thousands of books and records. Every time I manage to sell 4 boxes of stuff at a collectables show, someone gives me 6 boxes of stuff (or more).
Things I'd like to have, that are possible: Uncle $crooge 47-53, 4 different Disneyland games from the late 50s (complete) '56 Topps Football set, Civil War gum card set, an original Buddy Holly Album (I'd settle for a picture sleeve 45, if there were any) First edition first British printing Harry Potter Series. and a complete set of the Fawcett pin-back set.
(didn't we do this before...not complaining, it's always fun)

Date: 6/7/13 05:27 (UTC)I collect coffee mugs. I ask people to get me coffee mugs from vacation destination shops. I get weird ones from dollar stores. I snag corporate gift mugs when ever I can. I love mugs with misspelled words. My husband and I give them to each other as gifts. He gave me a Doctor Who mug for my birthday.
We have hundreds of coffee mugs. We don't display them or anything. Most of them are in boxes in the attic.

I'm now trying to focus on autographed things, mostly books and CDs. I've got autographed copies of Terry Gilliam, Neal Stephenson, Michael Chabon, and William Gibson (of those books that come to mind), and a John Entwhistle CD.
