Many people around the world seek a spiritual life that will be fulfilling and guide them through life. Religion has filled this need for centuries, but today religion often conflicts with what we see around us. As best we can tell, none of the traditional religions seem to be factually true and the beliefs are often in conflict with the world we see.

come worship at the one true church

Christ, I remember the original LJ that picture is from:

[livejournal.com profile] miss_mcdonald

It was some young lady from the Phillippines, hasn't been updated since around 2005 but it was hilarious when it was still current.

I don't see anything being proven here. What I see is the same assignment of supernatural significance to natural or human created events that plagues religions in general.

Also, the only difference between a religion and a cult is PR and popularity. All religions are cults if you take the literal meaning of the word.

And also, of course, what fornikate said. "Cargo cult" is a term coined to describe cults that sprang up around wartime activities on previously remote islands in the Pacific. Locals saw soldiers talking on radios and receiving "cargo" on planes in response. They assumed that the radios were to speak to God who would then send the cargo. They built "radios" and other items designed to look like the soldiers' tools in hopes of receiving cargo from God.

"The One True Religion - The Church of Aircraft", sounds like supernatural significance to me (religion, church, etc...)

But, as you'll recall, this all started with a simple play on the term "cargo cult".

Provability does not apply to religions, since most religions expound on non-provable events (life after death, miracles, what God wants).

"Cult" properly refers to a religious group that claims new canon (ie, The Book of Mormon when written, the New Testament when compiled). A "sect" is a group that keeps the old teaching canon, but splits off from a larger established group to "get back to the true traditions."

The cargo cults of the South Seas were trying to appease the gods to return the material stuff they lost when the US forces pulled out. Since people have aircraft, cargo cult does not apply. Perhaps they would be a cult, though, since aircraft are fairly new as a canon.

No, the crustacean just looks like he's angry and I figured that pic would be a good gauge of my mood about this kind of parody.

Coincidentally, that was the second time today I saw that little guy (http://charts-and-maps.livejournal.com/75007.html). Turns out he's a deep sea giant isopod, what looks like a ginormous sea louse.
