Many people around the world seek a spiritual life that will be fulfilling and guide them through life. Religion has filled this need for centuries, but today religion often conflicts with what we see around us. As best we can tell, none of the traditional religions seem to be factually true and the beliefs are often in conflict with the world we see.

And also, of course, what fornikate said. "Cargo cult" is a term coined to describe cults that sprang up around wartime activities on previously remote islands in the Pacific. Locals saw soldiers talking on radios and receiving "cargo" on planes in response. They assumed that the radios were to speak to God who would then send the cargo. They built "radios" and other items designed to look like the soldiers' tools in hopes of receiving cargo from God.

Date: 1/12/12 19:59 (UTC)"Cult" properly refers to a religious group that claims new canon (ie, The Book of Mormon when written, the New Testament when compiled). A "sect" is a group that keeps the old teaching canon, but splits off from a larger established group to "get back to the true traditions."
The cargo cults of the South Seas were trying to appease the gods to return the material stuff they lost when the US forces pulled out. Since people have aircraft, cargo cult does not apply. Perhaps they would be a cult, though, since aircraft are fairly new as a canon.
