Don't forget age! (https://twitter.com/mattyglesias/status/265454987520401408/photo/1) McCain only did well among 65+. And only because 65+ is one of the few groups that's really really white.
But seriously. While Asians are only 3 percent of the vote, they're 4.6% of the population. While Hispanics are only 8 percent of the electorate, they're 16% of the population. The writing is on the wall that this is the last national election Republicans can dismiss minority voters. Without appealing to any ethnicity other than white male voters, how exactly are Republicans going to dig out of this hole?
Then we have urban/rural demographics: Urban voters are 80% of the vote, compared to 1920 when 50% of voters were rural. That's really going to hurt Democratic candidates. (roll eyes)
Conservatives are painting themselves into a rut because they refuse to try and appeal to voters who have strong ethnic identities. On the one hand, I applaud their commitment to trying to be colorblind. On the other hand, I wish they didn't have to sound so racist doing it (wise latina flaptrap anyone?).
Okay. I kinda glad they're so incompetent. It's nice that I haven't batted an eye worrying that my team will win this election. But seriously. Democrats need a strong opposition party that is capable of actual governance. My team isn't going to win every election, and it'd sure be nice if the winner wasn't someone telling me that God meant for me to get raped, and if I'm extra lucky, I'll get a souvenir to take care of for 18+ years.
Our system is built on a fairly Socratic method, and requires a counterbalance. That means that you shouldn't just be thinking about how you might get lucky and pull out 80% of the white vote to eek out a 50.01% win. You should be thinking eight, twelve years down the ilne and actually advocating for a party that you're proud of. Because the alternative is the Republicans being the next Whigs, and the U.S. suffering in the interim because it takes so goddamned long to convince half of Americans they aren't throwing their vote away by voting Libertarian or whoever will try to take the Republicans place.
Democrats have managed to overcome the stain of being the party that started the civil war. But they did so by strongly advocating to finish the job Lincoln started. You supposedly disagree with the Republicans at least on gay marriage, if not other civil rights issues. It's a shame you're so busy trying to defend your team you aren't spending any time making your team defensible.
