Ecuador's president Rafael Correa has agreed to give Julian Assange asylum, officials within Ecuador's government have said.

I mostly enjoy Julian Assange for the trouble he causes. So I'm rather pleased that it looks like he just got a big break in his efforts not to be thrown in prison on questionable charges. Of course, this also causes big problems for the UK, Sweden and the US. But if he's been granted asylum then at this point I don't see anything sort of some major police action being able to stop Assange from going to Ecuador. Something like that would be a pretty major PR disaster. But one that would have to be balanced by all the trouble Assange could cause down the road.

Whatever happens this is clearly a story to watch.

I find that I can, without difficulty, hold in my mind all of these ideas about Julian Assange at once:
  • He is a hero fighting for vital liberties
  • He is an irresponsible egomaniac
  • The sexual assault charges against him have been pursued so aggressively because his heroic efforts have been politically inconvenient for state governments
  • He is guilty of crimes for which he rightly belongs in jail

I don't know if that makes him a sage though.

Though you might be a sage because that was pretty witty!

How is Assange an egomaniac?

Everytime I've asked someone to provide evidence of it, they never seem able to deliver...

I can't provide links, but one of the tech guys that started Wiki Leaks have moved on to found other leak portals to, as they state, take the spotlight "off the founder" and onto the service they provide. He seemed to indicate Assange liked the attention he got. Too much.

Never met the man, so can neither confirm nor deny.

I doubt that's true.

Assange has been somewhat famous since he was in his teens. He was one of the australian hackers arrested in operation sundevil and went by the handle 'mendax'. Its possible the worst that can be said about him is he still holds a grudge against the government and wikileaks exposing government misconduct is a personal revenge thing for him.

The purpose of other wikileaks portals is to make the information they distribute more difficult to censor or silence. It doesn't play an active role in excluding one portal or another. The underlying concept is de-centralization of information.

It seems to me that the urban myth about Assange being egotistical is part of a smear campaign. In a perfect world people wouldn't fall for such an obvious and blatant political spin. Unfortunately for us, we don't live in a perfect world?

Good for him. He may not be a perfect person, but I fully support his efforts to shove mud in the faces of governments around the world.

Now, if we could get Bradley Manning there, things would be even better.

He could hire SpaceX to build him a rocket.

Easy to do through standard diplomatic channels.

Issue him a diplomatic passport, walk out of the country.

IMO the best thing at this point is to just ignore him and let him live out his days in obscurity.

I'm not so up in arms about Assange, I'm just up in arms about his dupes and followers who somehow give him a free pass to hide information whilst campaigning in the name of free and transparent information. He's got people so fooled it's quite impressive, really.

There's a fine line between the government wanting you to shutup and the government shutting you up, between being a nuisance and a threat. Sure, he has some more dirt he could let out, but it must not be enough for him to cross the line.

If it is though, probably not the best idea for him to announce his travel plans.
