The gun lovers may sleep well, I guarantee. Even in the wake of the Colorado tragedy, and despite all the bickering on the issue of gun ownership, let's face it: Obama is even less likely to call for a stricter gun control - especially unlikely during an election year. Those are the realities.

Not that he was ever likely to do it, anyway. Which makes the hysterial conspiracy theories of NRA members (ETA: even its chairman) that there's an elaborate Obama plot to make gun ownership look bad part of history, the more ridiculous. It's as if, the more tolerant the administration is to gun owners, the louder the howling becomes.

Yeah, basically no action on a national level as far as gun control goes. My issue is more with what I consider unreasonably restrictive state laws(I'm in California) and the way laws vary so much state to state. I know States Rights are near and dear to many hearts but sometimes I'd like to live in a more united United States.

Many in congress remember the fallout from the Assault Weapons ban in the election right after it. That time around, we picked up the first Republican majority congress in both houses for a decade. I'm pretty sure the Democrats--and that's who would have to pitch the idea first--have much more on their plate in terms of social crusading than they are willing to risk losing both houses for over one issue.

Oh, and don't complain too much about variety of state laws. It's how we can deal with the fact one person's "good idea" may work for them, but cause chaos and hardship for other people. By chunking out these different ways of living into states, we have better chances to influence them locally. Instead of someone forcing their idea of "the one right way to live" on you from several states away.

Honestly, it would be one thing if these people genuinely meant self-defense when they said that phrase. What they really mean by that is the self-delusion that small-arms would ever be useful against a totalitarian US government that decided to ape Hitler or Stalin. In that case a few demonstrations of modern firepower makes most of them piss and shit their pants and they go home and forget they ever had the idea, and ten years later are the new faces leading the regime's secret police. The Second Amendment is no protection against an evil government, there is no protection against such a thing. Prevention, not protection, is the idea they should follow, but they don't.

Chechnya did pretty well for a while after starting off with small arms and cell phones. That conflict is still sort of trickling to completion. Add to that how well the Iraqi insurgents did for a while with small arms and "second hand" IED's but without the advantage of fighting the "home team"...

You may not be able to argue that small arms would win a war, but you have to admit a motivated, technologically savvy population containing a reasonable proportion of armed military veterans on their own turf can make for a pretty painful situation for a major military power. Especially one so dependent on the "local" economy.

So, small arms being useful?

Yes.

Only if enough people made it important.

I'm sure Bloomberg does. I'm not sure where the similarities lie: A complete lack of gun control effort by Democrats, versus a Republican effort to control voting. Is this similar? Of course, not enacting voter ID would not be an expansion of anything since that is mostly the way it is. So how would this be an expansion of voting rights? All I see are plays to restrict voting rights based on arbitrary standards.

Question: How does an unemployed medical student afford $20,000 in weapons gear?

If you start to look at the really big picture here, the obvious question arises: How does an unemployed medical student afford all the complex weapons gear, bomb-making gear, "flammable" booby trap devices, ammunition, multiple magazines, bullet-proof vest, groin protection, ballistic helmet, SWAT uniform and all the rest of it?

A decent AR-15 rifle costs $1,000 or more all by itself. The shotgun and handgun might run another $800 total. Spare mags, sights, slings, and so on will run you at least another $1,000 across three firearms. The bullet-proof vest is easily another $800, and the cost of the bomb-making gear is anybody's guess. With all the specialty body gear, ammunition, booby-trap devices and more, I'm guessing this is at least $20,000 in weapons and tactical gear, much of which is very difficult for civilians to get in the first place.
